SpArc: About Us

SpArc is where disability justice meets compassionate intervention.
A program of The Arc of Macomb County, SpArc is a unique, person-centered initiative designed to support people with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD) who are currently involved in or at risk of becoming involved in the criminal justice system. We provide proactive, holistic support at every possible intercept point — before, during, and after legal involvement.

Our goal is to reduce incarceration, prevent unnecessary arrests, and help individuals with IDD thrive in the community — not the courtroom.

SpArc’s wraparound services are tailored to each individual’s needs. Our experienced team builds a support plan to address barriers like housing, mental health care, benefits, and legal navigation.

We provide:

  • Jail diversion and deflection services
  • Housing navigation and placement
  • Behavioral health coordination
  • Peer support and mentorship
  • SSI/SSDI and benefits application assistance
  • Legal system navigation and advocacy
  • Job coaching and employment preparation
  • Community safety planning through special needs registries
  • Crisis prevention through collaboration with law enforcement and hospitals

We work side-by-side with courts, jails, public defenders, hospitals, behavioral health providers, and community agencies to create meaningful alternatives to incarceration.

SpArc supports adults with IDD — including those with co-occurring mental illness — who are navigating the legal system in Macomb County and surrounding communities. Our clients are referred through courts, attorneys, law enforcement, shelters, and behavioral health agencies — or they can reach out directly

SpArc operates using the Sequential Intercept Model, working to prevent justice involvement at every step: from community services to re-entry planning after jail. Our partnerships with law enforcement and disability-focused safety programs help build a more inclusive and understanding system.
